What you choose to decorate your walls with is entirely up to you. There are really no rules or templates to follow. It’s all about what you like and what you think fits with your interior style. Maybe you want art prints, photo art or other wall decorations on your walls? Or maybe you just want certain colors on the wall: black and white posters or a combination of different shades of blue? When there are no clear rules to follow, it’s easy to get confused – you might need some inspiration from an interior design professional.
– I don’t think you should be afraid of making mistakes. Creating a gallery wall is a creative process, and sometimes you have to let it take time. Often you don’t have all the paintings from the start, so it’s difficult to come up with a quick solution. It’s simply a matter of trial and error,” says Camilla Larsson, who styles many homes in her work as a homestaging consultant.
How do I find great posters and designs?
– When looking for graphic art, posters and posters, start with what you like. I often find many nice motifs at various auctions and flea markets – to renew the paintings, I often replace the frame. Then I think there are many nice posters from, for example, museums and exhibitions that can be very decorative and feel personal.
What is a common mistake when creating a blackboard wall?
– I find that many people have a tendency to hang their paintings a little too high up on the wall. It’s not that noticeable if you only have one painting, but as soon as you have several or combine them with furniture, they can easily end up a little too high up.
Here are Camilla Larsson’s invaluable tips on how to design a personalized blackboard wall!
1. think about the composition
Sometimes, the composition and hanging of the paintings can make them look scattered. Try to keep the space between all the paintings somewhere between five and seven centimeters – this can create the feeling of a unit that holds together without anything sticking out.
2. Set up mirrors or light sconces among the frames
A gallery wall doesn’t necessarily have to consist only of posters, art, photographs or prints. To create a more personalized and exciting gallery wall, it’s also effective to add mirrors, candle lights or small vases among the frames.
3. Stick to one color on the blackboard wall
An easy way to bring a gallery wall together is to create a common thread of colors and shades on pictures and frames. Try to find motifs and frames that go a bit tone in tone with each other to create harmony. Using only black, white or wood-colored frames for your designs can also create a unified feel. It all depends on the effect you are looking for.
4. use the full height of the wall
Put the pictures all the way up to the ceiling and build the picture wall both upwards and downwards to create more dynamics. The ceiling height is also perceived as higher by placing the paintings on the entire wall. However, remember not to only build in one direction, but try to achieve a good balance both upwards and downwards.
5. Put up an uneven number of boards and posters
How many boards you plan to have is up to you and how much space you have to work with. But if you’re creating a small gallery wall, it’s a good idea to work with uneven numbers, for example to put up five pictures instead of four. This makes it easier to achieve a varied composition. However, if there are fewer than three, it works better to put the paintings next to or under each other.
6. Let the frames have different sizes and shapes
Use different frames to add some variety to your gallery wall. Putting up paintings of different sizes or formats creates an exciting and vibrant wall, in the same way that a landscape or portrait format can do. If the picture frame is not suitable for the subject, you can easily buy or make a passe-partout yourself, that way you can use older frames that may not have a standard format.
