Style tips: 5 accessories for summer vacations

– For me, summer is actually a very timeless season where I have many accessories that are used year after year. I never feel like I need to get a whole new wardrobe, but I like to pull out old things from previous summers,” says Julia Stridh.

In her work as a freelance stylist, she sees trends come and go at a rapid pace, but instead wants to pay attention to personal style and focus on what is sustainable in the long run.

– For me, there are no rules in fashion. Choosing what style you want and how you want to dress is very individual. The most important thing is that you feel good and that your style fits your life and your everyday life. If you feel like wearing twenty accessories or none at all, that’s fine, whatever the trend.

Julia Stridh’s stylish tips on summery accessories:

1. cap or straw hat

Wearing something on your head in the summer may seem obvious, but there are many options to choose from when it comes to the style and type of headwear such as caps and hats.

– My personal style is to use different types of peaked caps, either a full-face model or an open peak. I almost always wear a cap on my head because it is functional and a nice protection from the sun. As a style tip, I’d say a straw hat with an oversized brim is nice, but stay away from hats with a small brim! Something that I think works is to be inspired by the Prada brand and choose hats made of nylon material, in the “fishing hat” model. There are also bucket hats, as they are also called, with larger brim that can protect a little more against the sun,” says Julia Stridh.

2. the sunglasses

Sunglasses are appreciated by most people when the sun comes out, and there are many options to choose from. Big, round, glamorous or retro-inspired – there’s often something for everyone.

– For myself, I like the classic most, for example my round Ray-Ban or my more luxurious favorites from Celine. If I wear them on the beach, I usually feel very nice. Then I have a pair from the brand Nividas, in the more pointed model Rio De Janeiro – I really like the shape and would say that they feel more current now than ever. Right now I’m also seeing a lot of sunglasses that are very narrow and should sit lower on the nose. It gives a very 90s feeling if that’s what you’re looking for,” says Julia Stridh.

3. beach bag

Which bag you want for your vacation depends a bit on what you’re doing. Maybe you need to pack sunscreen, towels, shoes and a book for the beach? Then a larger model is good. If you only need to carry your valuables, a smaller handbag is perfect.

– I would say that a straw bag as a beach bag is always right. It can be a large or small one in varying models, but the vast majority work perfectly on the beach. I usually also use a slightly larger tote bag in canvas or slightly smaller handbags in woven plastic – very practical near water and sand! The brand Loewe has nice straw bags with leather details if you want to invest in something luxurious. If you are looking for a bag for the holidays that also works to have in town, I would choose a nylon bag, such as a fanny pack.

4. the shawl or scarf

A scarf can give you a retro-inspired look if you choose to tie it around your head. On the beach, in town or just in your bag, the scarf is a stylish and useful accessory to pull out.

– In summer I almost always have a scarf with me. I like to choose a larger model in silk. Either I use it to tie up my hair or I put it over my forehead and head. I also think it’s very practical to have a scarf in your bag on the beach, for example to tie around your hip to feel a little more dressed if you need to go somewhere. I think you should invest in finding a nice quality silk scarf, either a little more discreet or with a pattern. When it comes to specific brands, I think Toteme and Hermés have many nice scarves,” says Julia Stridh.

5. The necessities and travel articles

When traveling, small toiletry bags, make-up bags and small bags are invaluable for storing toiletries or valuables. You can find both more expensive models in genuine leather or smart and durable nylon variants.

– Since I travel a lot for work, I travel both in winter and summer – so this is an accessory I use all year round. I think it’s great to have a toiletry bag with a few different compartments that allow for storage. I think there are good variants from, for example, Muji and Arket, which by the way has a great travel collection! If you want to invest in real leather, I think you can find nice toiletry bags or make-up bags used from, for example, Celine or Louis Vuitton, even Smythson has nice travel items. A more luxurious toiletry bag is something I will definitely invest in at some point, says Julia Stridh.
