The world’s most expensive Moomin mug

Swimming jump with seashells

The most expensive Moomin mug was a prototype of the 2006 summer seasonal mug, the “Simhopp”, which was the first summer seasonal mug produced and is probably the most valuable. The prototype is called the “Seashell Swim” and is similar to the model that went into production, but has a white pattern of seashells and coral in the background.

The mug was sold at the end of October for a record price of SEK 236 478. In April 2020, a similar mug was sold in Finland for €12,000, approximately SEK 120,000.

“Swim jump with seashell” was close to going into production, but instead the slightly simpler version that was later on sale was released.

About 300 copies of “Swim Jump with Seashell” were made, most of which were destroyed – but a dozen were distributed among Arabia employees. These are now being sold for record sums. No one knows exactly how many are left, but they are probably rarer than the Fazer mug.

The second most valuable mug is the Fazer mug, produced in 2004 for the Karl Fazer Café in Helsinki, with a motif from a Christmas advertisement drawn by Tove Jansson. This model was only produced in 400 pieces and is numbered at the bottom. The most expensive Fazer mug sold on Tradera was sold for SEK 167,000 in March 2022 (number 323). In February 2018, another one was sold for SEK 84,900 on Tradera. At Bukowskis, a copy was sold in 2018 for just over SEK 63,000.
